This year more than 100 University of British Columbia (UBC) graduate students took up the challenge of the Three Minute Thesis (3MT) with the aim of effectively expressing their thesis research as a three-minute speech for a general audience.

We began with 10 polished and articulate 3-minute graduate student research presentations. And in the end, when the dust settled, the people’s choice ballots counted and the judges’ scorecards tallied, prizes were awarded to a select few, but applause and accolades, shared by all. Here are the results.

It was a full house at the Grad Student Centre Ballroom yesterday afternoon. The crowd that gathered to hear the 3-minute research presentations of some of UBC’s finest graduate student researchers were treated to 31 outstanding orations.

Two UBC Doctoral Students receive national recognition for interdisciplinary research.

Two of UBC’s doctoral students, Kaylee Byers and Rowan Cockett, not only received NSERC Vanier Scholarships in 2014, but have been further acknowledged for the interdisciplinary nature of their research with the annual the NSERC Gilles Brassard Doctoral Prize for Interdisciplinary Research.
New Online Application

UBC has introduced a new online application system for prospective graduate students applying for programs with start dates in January 2016 or later. This new technology offers applicants a clear and intuitive path through the application process and greater flexibility for applicants and referees to provide required information and documentation.
