2018 Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship and Banting Postdoctoral Fellowship recipients announced

Twenty-one doctoral students at UBC have received a Vanier Canada Graduate Fellowship, and nine postdoctoral fellows have received a Banting Postdoctoral Fellowship. The announcement was made on September 6 by the Honourable Kirsty Duncan, Minister of Science, at the University of Alberta. Across Canada, there were 167 new Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship recipients and 70 new Banting Postdoctoral Fellowship recipients, for a total investment of $34.9 million.

These young researchers are working on subjects that span the health sciences, the natural sciences and engineering, and the social sciences and humanities, from Federico Andrade Rivas’s research on addressing pesticide contamination among the Cayambe Indigenous community to Mackenzie Kinney’s investigation of species hybridization as a mode of rapid evolution in response to environmental change, to Douglas Robb’s analysis of the contemporary debates in British Columbia’s transition to a low-carbon future.

"Our greatest hope lies with the ambitions of the next generation of Canada's researchers. Their curiosity and desire to collaborate will lead to new medical treatments, health care programs and social innovations that will strengthen our economy and support a growing middle class. Our government is proud to support them as they gain the skills and experiences needed for the jobs of tomorrow," said Duncan.
