The Department of Physics and Astronomy is a broad-based department with a wide range of research interests covering many key topics in contemporary physics, astronomy, and applied physics. We are a vibrant community that engages in a wide range of research directions, from probing the origin of the universe to exploring emergent phenomena in complex systems, that provide deep insights into the nature of the universe and practical solutions that will help define the world of tomorrow. Departmental research activities are supported by several computing and experimental facilities, and excellent electronics and machine shops.
Our graduate programs include approximately 200 graduate students, working on experiments and theory in research fields that include: Applied Physics, Astronomy/Astrophysics, Atomic/Molecular/Optics, Biophysics, Condensed Matter, Cosmology, Gravity, Medical Physics, Nuclear Physics, Particle Physics, and String Theory.
The Department of Physics & Astronomy at UBC is noted for the excellence of its research and its high academic standards and integrity. It is one of the largest and most diverse physics and astronomy departments in Canada. We are constantly rated as one of the top Physics & Astronomy programs in the world. Much of the Department's research is enhanced by local facilities such as the TRIUMF National Laboratory, the Advanced Materials and Process Engineering Laboratory (AMPEL), and the BC Cancer Agency, UBC, and associated teaching hospitals, in addition to many specialized research laboratories housed within the Department. There is a great deal of collaboration and overlap of interests among the various groups.
Each year, our faculty bring over $20 million in research grants. This enables us to maintain world-class research laboratories and computational facilities, attract distinguished post-doctorate researchers, and support highly skilled engineers and technicians whose expertise is critical to our research.

Applicants to UBC have access to a variety of funding options, including merit-based (i.e. based on your academic performance) and need-based (i.e. based on your financial situation) opportunities.
From September 2024 all full-time students in UBC-Vancouver PhD programs will be provided with a funding package of at least $24,000 for each of the first four years of their PhD. The funding package may consist of any combination of internal or external awards, teaching-related work, research assistantships, and graduate academic assistantships. Please note that many graduate programs provide funding packages that are substantially greater than $24,000 per year. Please check with your prospective graduate program for specific details of the funding provided to its PhD students.
All applicants are encouraged to review the awards listing to identify potential opportunities to fund their graduate education. The database lists merit-based scholarships and awards and allows for filtering by various criteria, such as domestic vs. international or degree level.
Many professors are able to provide Research Assistantships (GRA) from their research grants to support full-time graduate students studying under their supervision. The duties constitute part of the student's graduate degree requirements. A Graduate Research Assistantship is considered a form of fellowship for a period of graduate study and is therefore not covered by a collective agreement. Stipends vary widely, and are dependent on the field of study and the type of research grant from which the assistantship is being funded.
Graduate programs may have Teaching Assistantships available for registered full-time graduate students. Full teaching assistantships involve 12 hours work per week in preparation, lecturing, or laboratory instruction although many graduate programs offer partial TA appointments at less than 12 hours per week. Teaching assistantship rates are set by collective bargaining between the University and the Teaching Assistants' Union.
Academic Assistantships are employment opportunities to perform work that is relevant to the university or to an individual faculty member, but not to support the student’s graduate research and thesis. Wages are considered regular earnings and when paid monthly, include vacation pay.
Canadian and US applicants may qualify for governmental loans to finance their studies. Please review eligibility and types of loans.

Many foreign governments provide support to their citizens in pursuing education abroad. International applicants should check the various governmental resources in their home country, such as the Department of Education, for available scholarships.
The possibility to pursue work to supplement income may depend on the demands the program has on students. It should be carefully weighed if work leads to prolonged program durations or whether work placements can be meaningfully embedded into a program.
International students enrolled as full-time students with a valid study permit can work on campus for unlimited hours and work off-campus for no more than 20 hours a week.
A good starting point to explore student jobs is the UBC Work Learn program or a Co-Op placement.
Students with taxable income in Canada may be able to claim federal or provincial tax credits.
Canadian residents with RRSP accounts may be able to use the Lifelong Learning Plan (LLP) which allows students to withdraw amounts from their registered retirement savings plan (RRSPs) to finance full-time training or education for themselves or their partner.

By studying these electrons and relating their properties back to the material he was able to further our understanding of their interactions. This brings us closer to a complete description of superconductivity in these materials. |

2013 | Dr. Chin developed a new method of radiation delivery that can more precisely target lung cancers while reducing exposure to the patient's healthy tissue. This technique allows doctors to prescribe higher radiation doses to the tumour without increasing the risk of treatment complications, and this significantly improves the chances of patient survival. |
2013 | Dr. Qiu developed a computer program to study radiation exposure. She focused on a type of in-room CT imaging procedures which increases the precision of radiation therapy. This study will help physicians and patients to understand the potential cancer risk due to the imaging process. |
2012 | Dr. Hossain conducted his research in the field of Superconductors. He made accurate measurements of four materials in virtually zero electrical resistance, and produced results which differed significantly from the existing literature. His findings will help to increase our understanding of superconductivity. |
2012 | Dr. Ramshaw studied the electronic behaviour of materials that exhibit the unique characteristic of high-temperature superconductivity. He provided key insights into the puzzling behaviour of electrons, which carry electricity in these materials with no energy loss. His work has narrowed the theoretical field and has provided clear guidance for future experiments. |
2012 | Dr. Brook-Roberge measured the ratio in neutrino interaction probability between oxygen and carbon using a novel statistical subtraction method. This result will help improve the measurement of neutrino oscillations to better understand the fundamental mechanisms of the universe. |
2012 | Topological insulators are materials which are insulating in the core but not on the surface. Dr. Rosenberg studied four exotic effects in three dimensional topological insulators. These materials were recently discovered and have been shown to be a new phase of matter. This research advances our basic understanding of this new class of materials. |
2012 | The stellar winds of nearly half the dying stars in the universe have remained a mystery for almost four decades. As a result of his research, Dr. Thirumalai has been able to propose a mechanism that promises a resolution of this outstanding problem. His work brings together two hitherto disparate areas of physics into a single cohesive theory, with implications for dying stars as well as for stars that are still forming in the universe. |
2012 | Dr. Kirby participated in experiments at J-PARC,the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex. He contributed to the T2K particle physics experiment and measured the rate at which subatomic neutrino particles passed through a detector. This measurement confirms that the recent T2K research findings are reliable, and advances research in this field. |
