Experimental Pathology refers to research in any area of biomedical investigation that is relevant to human disease. Since it is necessary to understand the normal working of the system to fully define the changes associated with disease, the areas represented at UBC cover a wide range of fields and approaches. Work at all levels of biological organization is involved, from protein to lipoprotein biochemistry and molecular biology through cell and tumour biology, animal models for studies on pulmonary and cardiovascular pathophysiology and viral and bacterial infection processes, to clinical studies on human population and the AIDS epidemic.
We train students with varied backgrounds in science and medicine including: biochemistry, physiology, cell biology and microbiology/immunology.

The diversity of research going on in the PhD in Pathology and Laboratory Medicine was a strong selling point for me. With a focus on understanding pathology in general--and common mechanisms underlying different types of pathology--I feel that I am able to develop a better understanding of disease than I might have in a different program. There are also many unique opportunities to interact with mentors in different positions (basic scientists, clinicians, clinical chemists), which has really broadened my ideas of potential career paths following my graduate training.

A minimum of three references are required for application to graduate programs at UBC. References should be requested from individuals who are prepared to provide a report on your academic ability and qualifications.

Applicants to UBC have access to a variety of funding options, including merit-based (i.e. based on your academic performance) and need-based (i.e. based on your financial situation) opportunities.
All full-time students who begin a UBC-Vancouver PhD program in September 2018 or later will be provided with a funding package of at least $24,000 for each of the first four years of their PhD. The funding package may consist of any combination of internal or external awards, teaching-related work, research assistantships, and graduate academic assistantships. Please note that many graduate programs provide funding packages that are substantially greater than $24,000 per year. Please check with your prospective graduate program for specific details of the funding provided to its PhD students.
All applicants are encouraged to review the awards listing to identify potential opportunities to fund their graduate education. The database lists merit-based scholarships and awards and allows for filtering by various criteria, such as domestic vs. international or degree level.
Graduate programs may have Teaching Assistantships available for registered full-time graduate students. Full teaching assistantships involve 12 hours work per week in preparation, lecturing, or laboratory instruction although many graduate programs offer partial TA appointments at less than 12 hours per week. Teaching assistantship rates are set by collective bargaining between the University and the Teaching Assistants' Union.
Many professors are able to provide Research Assistantships (GRA) from their research grants to support full-time graduate students studying under their direction. The duties usually constitute part of the student's graduate degree requirements. A Graduate Research Assistantship is a form of financial support for a period of graduate study and is, therefore, not covered by a collective agreement. Unlike other forms of fellowship support for graduate students, the amount of a GRA is neither fixed nor subject to a university-wide formula. The stipend amounts vary widely, and are dependent on the field of study and the type of research grant from which the assistantship is being funded. Some research projects also require targeted research assistance and thus hire graduate students on an hourly basis.
Canadian and US applicants may qualify for governmental loans to finance their studies. Please review eligibility and types of loans.
All students may be able to access private sector or bank loans.
Many foreign governments provide support to their citizens in pursuing education abroad. International applicants should check the various governmental resources in their home country, such as the Department of Education, for available scholarships.
The possibility to pursue work to supplement income may depend on the demands the program has on students. It should be carefully weighed if work leads to prolonged program durations or whether work placements can be meaningfully embedded into a program.
Canadian residents with RRSP accounts may be able to use the Lifelong Learning Plan (LLP) which allows students to withdraw amounts from their registered retirement savings plan (RRSPs) to finance full-time training or education for themselves or their partner.

|2011||Dr. Wong investigated the role of a protein called Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF) in the thickening of blood vessels, particularly in heart transplants. His research highlighted the abnormal presence of VEGF in human disease, showed its effect on cholesterol accumulation, and explored potential treatments targeting this protein.|
|2011||Dr. Bessette investigated the role of a protein tyrosine phosphatase in regulating cell signaling and prostate cancer. He found that expression of this protein promoted prostate cancer and may be a valuable biomarker for prostate cancer aggressiveness.|
|2011||Dr. Schutz examined the potential of ketone bodies, an energy substrate alternative to glucose, to protect the developing brain from injury during hypoglycemia. These studies help us in designing better and preemptive treatment strategies for children at risk of repeated episodes of hypoglycemia.|
|2011||Dr. Gao demonstrated the importance of a protein degradation pathway in the replication process of a virus. Blocking this pathway can decrease inflammation of the heart muscle caused by viral infection in mice.|
|2010||Dr. Klimek investigated the association between defective hormone production in insulin-producing beta-cells of the pancreas and dysfunction of these cells when transplanted into patients with type 1 diabetes. Her research led to the discovery of two potential biomarkers of beta-cell function which may be used to predict the onset of islet transplant failure.|
|2010||Dr. Tsui examined the genetic changes during the development of oral cancer. She identified biomarkers predictive of progression risks in oral precancerous lesions, and elucidated the molecular mechanisms that are associated with progression to cancer. The research contributes to the understanding of the natural history of oral cancer development.|
|2010||Dr. Chari's work improves our ability to detect lung cancer. He developed an integrative, multi-pronged approach that identifies key features, specific to lung cancer, that existing methods miss.|
|2010||Dr. Hutton examined the role of inflammation in diabetes. Her research provides new insight into how a specific part of the immune system that recognizes infections and causes inflammation may play a role in the development of diabetes and in the rejection of transplanted organs.|
|2010||Dr. Chin studied the mechanical properties of airway smooth muscle in health and disease, and the mechanisms underlying smooth-muscle contraction, an area that has been poorly understood. His research provides insight into the cause of asthma by demonstrating that asthmatic airway smooth muscle has altered mechanics.|
|2010||Dr. Liu studied the function of a newly identified inflammatory gene and showed how it promotes cell survival during viral infection as well as under cell stress conditions. The finding may improve our understanding of virus-host interaction and the pathogenesis of viral myocarditis.|
