Experimental Medicine is the study of the pathogenesis and treatment of disease. Modern experimental medicine represents a rapidly growing body of knowledge involving the determination of diseases processes and the development of appropriate therapies.
The Experimental Medicine Program is intended for individuals seeking a career in research. The Department of Medicine offers opportunities and facilities for advanced studies in Experimental medicine, leading toward the M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees. Members of the Department direct research programs in a wide range of basic and clinically relevant areas. There are a variety of special interest areas of national and international stature. Specialties within the Experimental Medicine Program include: Cardiology, Endocrinology, Gastroenterology, Hematology, Infectious Diseases, Medical Immunology, Medical Oncology, Molecular Biology, Nephrology, Neurology and Respiratory Medicine.
The principal emphasis of this graduate program is training in research. Success at this level is traditionally measured by the preparation and defense of a thesis. Course work is required of all students, based on the background of the candidate and the degree program. The work of each Ph.D. candidate will be supervised by a candidate’s Committee consisting of not fewer than three members. These may include faculty members from a department other than that in which the candidate is writing the thesis.
UBC Experimental Medicine program's emphasis on research meant that I was able to be involved in practical research since day one. [It] also provided me with ample funding opportunities, including travel fund supports which has allowed me to showcase my work and receive valuable feedback in national and international conferences.
Applicants are not required to have a supervisor at the time of applying, but the application won't be reviewed until they secure a supervisor and all required paperwork is submitted.

For admission to the PhD program in Experimental Medicine, the student must hold a M.Sc. degree in life sciences, biology, zoology, biochemistry, or related disciplines.
All applicants have to submit transcripts from all past post-secondary study. Document submission requirements depend on whether your institution of study is within Canada or outside of Canada.
A minimum of three references are required for application to graduate programs at UBC. References should be requested from individuals who are prepared to provide a report on your academic ability and qualifications.

Applicants to UBC have access to a variety of funding options, including merit-based (i.e. based on your academic performance) and need-based (i.e. based on your financial situation) opportunities.
Successful applicants who will start the Ph.D. program and who do not hold a major scholarship, will receive a minimum stipend of $22,000 per year from their supervisor.
All applicants are encouraged to review the awards listing to identify potential opportunities to fund their graduate education. The database lists merit-based scholarships and awards and allows for filtering by various criteria, such as domestic vs. international or degree level.
Graduate programs may have Teaching Assistantships available for registered full-time graduate students. Full teaching assistantships involve 12 hours work per week in preparation, lecturing, or laboratory instruction although many graduate programs offer partial TA appointments at less than 12 hours per week. Teaching assistantship rates are set by collective bargaining between the University and the Teaching Assistants' Union.
Many professors are able to provide Research Assistantships (GRA) from their research grants to support full-time graduate students studying under their direction. The duties usually constitute part of the student's graduate degree requirements. A Graduate Research Assistantship is a form of financial support for a period of graduate study and is, therefore, not covered by a collective agreement. Unlike other forms of fellowship support for graduate students, the amount of a GRA is neither fixed nor subject to a university-wide formula. The stipend amounts vary widely, and are dependent on the field of study and the type of research grant from which the assistantship is being funded. Some research projects also require targeted research assistance and thus hire graduate students on an hourly basis.

All students may be able to access private sector or bank loans.
Many foreign governments provide support to their citizens in pursuing education abroad. International applicants should check the various governmental resources in their home country, such as the Department of Education, for available scholarships.
The possibility to pursue work to supplement income may depend on the demands the program has on students. It should be carefully weighed if work leads to prolonged program durations or whether work placements can be meaningfully embedded into a program.
Canadian residents with RRSP accounts may be able to use the Lifelong Learning Plan (LLP) which allows students to withdraw amounts from their registered retirement savings plan (RRSPs) to finance full-time training or education for themselves or their partner.

|2012||Dr. Lehman's integrative analysis of large-scale genomic data has identified androgen and anti-androgen regulated RNAs expressed in prostate cancer cells. The expression of the previously overlooked RNAs may be involved in the failure of androgen deprivation therapy and ultimately the death of prostate cancer patients.|
|2012||Dr. Henderson developed novel antibodies to G-quadruplex nucleic acids that may play a key role in cancer. Dr. Henderson has provided the first direct evidence of the existence of G-quadruplex nucleic acids in human cells. His research has provided the tools to explore the natural biology of these unique nucleic acid secondary structures.|
|2011||Dr. Wang demonstrated effectiveness of a novel agent in preventing islet transplantation rejection. This strategy by using co-stimulation blockade provides proof-of-principle for clinical application in treating diabetes via beta cell replacement therapy without ongoing immuno-suppressive regimen.|
|2011||Dr. Cho's study in the field of Experimental Medicine investigated neural stem cells in the brain. His research examined the effect of high-frequency electrical stimulation and he found that this stimulation regulates the fate of neural stem cells. The results of this study will contribute to treatments for brain diseases.|
|2011||Dr. Blohmkes research focused on the inflammation in the lungs of patients suffering from the fatal genetic disease Cystic Fibrosis. He identified the receptor mediating the immune response to bacterial pathogens as a modifying gene and novel anti-inflammatory target in Cystic Fibrosis lung disease.|
|2011||Dr. Chavez identified a novel keratinocyte-derived complex that functions as a collagen inhibitory factor for fibroblasts. The identification of this complex provides a novel therapeutic strategy to prevent the formation of hypetrophic scars, frequently observed in patients following burn injury, deep trauma and some surgical incisions.|
|2011||Dr. Ajami's study of the central nervous system showed that blood-derived cells do not contribute to maintenance of microglia, innate immune cells in the brain and spinal cord. She found infiltration of blood-derived macrophages is responsible for the progress of Multiple Sclerosis. This ground-breaking discovery has implications for MS treatments.|
|2011||Dr. Wong investigated the cellular response to ultraviolet radiation. He discovered how a tumor suppressor protein protects the human genome after ultraviolet radiation. This leads to better understanding of melanoma development which has implications for designing new treatment strategies.|
|2011||Dr. Nettlefold explored how physical activity and sedentary time relate to cardiovascular health in children. She also conducted a school-based physical activity intervention that improved childrens fitness. This work supports the need to increase childrens physical activity and reduce their sedentary time to improve their cardiovascular health.|
|2011||Dr. Ghaffari identified CD13 as a novel surface receptor in skin cells, which upon activation increases protein degradation in wounds. These findings advance our understanding of the wound healing process and provide a new therapeutic target in treatment of post-injury scarring.|
Experimental Medicine offers research opportunities in the following specialties: cardiology, cancer biology, dermatology, gastroenterology, hematology/oncology, infectious diseases, molecular medicine, nephrology, neurology, and respiratory medicine. All these fields can involve patients and/or experimental animal models.
