Why did you decide to pursue a graduate degree?

I’ve decided to pursue a graduate degree as a result of finding research mentally motivating, innovative and challenging. I also enjoy having a collaborative environment.

Why did you decide to study at UBC?

I chose to aim further and come to UBC for its impact worldwide, being a research powerhouse and because of the high calibre of the Biochemistry and Molecular Biology program. The Vancouver location was also a pull since I love being outdoor and in contact with nature.

What is it specifically, that your program offers, that attracted you?

I was attracted to the Biochemistry and Molecular Biology program because of the several research opportunities that we could be involved in. The program prepares you for academic life by providing several symposiums and seminars throughout the year. Another interesting thing is that the labs are not only located on campus, allowing students to work and collaborate within different research facilities.

What was the best surprise about UBC or life in Vancouver?

The best surprise about UBC and life in Vancouver was the friendly and welcoming environment. There is always someone keen to help you.

What aspect of your graduate program do you enjoy the most or are looking forward to with the greatest curiosity?

Being committed to research in the very beginning of my undergrad was very beneficial. I was able to develop, not only research skills, but also leadership and communication skills, as well as being responsible for projects I was working on.

What do you like to do for fun or relaxation?

Some of the things I love to do in my spare time include exploring the city since it has so many great options like going to parks, hiking and several restaurants. I also enjoy traveling to new places, watching sports, playing board games and sharing meals with friends and family. Most days you can find me spending quality time with my lovely husband.

What advice do you have for new graduate students?

We all know being a PhD student can be stressful. Even though it goes by fast, try to enjoy your experience in research. Also, try not to worry too much, because if you are responsible and determined enough everything eventually works out.
