Faculty of Medicine researchers are investigating how everything from our genes, to the design of our cities, to the geography of extreme weather events can interact to make us more vulnerable to the effects of climate change. This research is being showcased in the faculty’s Pathway Magazine.

It’s 2023, and coming out is, well, complicated

August 6 sees Vancouver’s Pride Parade. An annual event that attracts visitors from across Canada and beyond to celebrate and support LGBTQ2+ communities. Despite unprecedented LGBTQ2+ visibility, coming out as a sexual minority can still be a deeply ambivalent experience, according to new research from UBC professor Dr. Amin Ghaziani.

Dr. Ghaziani conducted in-depth interviews with 52 adult Vancouverites about their experiences coming out over the last five years. Read a Q&A with Dr. Ghaziani from UBC News to hear more about this research. 

Employers should allow workers to break the rules — sometimes

When employees break the rules at work, they can land in hot water — but according to a new study from the UBC Sauder School of Business, bosses may want to think twice about cracking down on those who don’t stick to the script.

The research from Dr. Irene Kim found that giving employees leeway to break the rules can lead to better customer service and employee satisfaction. Read more.
