I decided to pursue a graduate degree based on a combination of my previous professional and research experience in Social Work. My goal is to conduct Social Work research in the field of adolescence to better understand parent-adolescent relationships, specifically when it comes to adolescents resisting their parents.
UBC is a recognized global leader in Social Work research. As the oldest school in Western Canada, I wanted to pursue a graduate degree at a well-established institution.
The faculty in my program have extensive research experience and a wide range of Social Work expertise.
I was surprised by how much UBC feels like a community.
My professional and volunteer experiences helped to shape my ideas and area of interest for pursuing a research career.
Trust in the process.
The detrimental effects that prolonged parent-adolescent disagreement can have on adolescent development have been documented but the strategies that adolescents use to resist their parents are not well understood. Research on resistance comes primarily from the child socialization literature, which has shown that adolescents actively resist attempts by adults to control, guide or influence them. At the same time, it is a multidimensional construct reflecting the capacity for adolescents to interpret parent expectations and a growing aptitude in expressing autonomy. My research seeks to understand what these strategies are and how they manifest over the course of adult-adolescent interactions.
