Why did you decide to pursue a graduate degree?

I have always been fond of learning new methods in Computer Science. By pursuing a PhD in Computer Science, I have learned how to collaborate with researchers and lead projects to develop methods to solve real-world research problems. I have also improved my teaching skills.

Why did you decide to study at UBC?

The Computer Science department at UBC is recognized internationally for excellence in research. Particularly, I found the research area of my supervisors interesting. I also had family ties in the city.

What is it specifically, that your program offers, that attracted you?

The computer science department has excellent faculty members. The faculty members also have strong connections within academia and industry. The program has enabled me to collaborate with influential computer scientists within and outside the department.

What was the best surprise about UBC or life in Vancouver?

Vancouver is a beautiful city, with beautiful beaches and parks.

What aspects of your life or career before now have best prepared you for your UBC graduate program?

Before graduate studies, I was always learning new topics independently and working towards goals. In addition, my high school and undergraduate education well prepared me for graduate studies.

What advice do you have for new graduate students?

Don’t be afraid to pursue a research area that you do not have prior experience in.
