Why did you decide to pursue a graduate degree?

After completing my Masters degree, I had no doubt that research was the right path for me. Nutrition research is exciting and challenging. Furthermore, I wanted to have stronger skills in critical thinking, statistical analysis and research design to become an independent researcher in my field. The Vanier scholarship provides me the opportunity - and the luxury - to fully commit to my studies, which truly enables success in my graduate degree.

Why did you decide to study at UBC?

My Faculty at UBC is an emerging centre for International Nutrition with an extraordinarily talented and growing research team. We have international collaborations with incredible organizations such as Helen Keller International, UNICEF and World Food Program. Dr. Tim Green and Dr. Judy McLean have established research programs in over 10 countries to date with a large group of graduate students and exceptional across-project learning opportunities. I was thrilled to become part of this well-established research team.

What was the best surprise about UBC or life in Vancouver?

Life in Vancouver is like an extended holiday. I love to be a tourist in my own city and explore new places. Driving over the Granville bridge into downtown is my favorite route – I never get tired of that beautiful view.

What advice do you have for new graduate students?

Believe whole-heartedly in your work and be proud of your accomplishments. Always take a moment to appreciate your successes, even the small ones.
