Why did you decide to pursue a graduate degree?

Before attending UBC, I completed a MA in economics from the University of Victoria and a MA in economics and philosophy at the Erasmus Institute for Philosophy and Economics in Rotterdam. I decided to continue with this graduate work for two main reasons: the work itself has been extremely rewarding and fulfilling and, generally speaking, the people I that have met make excellent company.

Why did you decide to study at UBC?

I chose to attend UBC both for its location on the beautiful south west coast of Canada and for the quality of the degree being offered. Our graduate program at UBC is lively and many of the faculty members are not only top-notch researchers, but gifted pedagogues as well. Since I began my studies at UBC in 2009, my choice to attend this university has been vindicated time and again.

What do you hope to accomplish with your research?

Most of the research on natural capital focuses on the mapping and valuation of ecosystem services. But there is no specific theory of natural capital. Nor is there any comprehensive understanding as to how natural capital relates to other key concepts in the history of economic thought. My research aims to help fill this gap by working towards a general theory of natural capital that supports the empirical work currently being conducted by biophysical and social scientists.

What are your future career goals?

I hope to teach the history and philosophy of economics, and continue my research, at a Canadian university.

Personal Interests / Hobbies

My personal interests include cycling, hiking, running, Ultimate Frisbee and woodworking.
