Many students in research-based programs (Masters and PhD) wonder about what career paths they might pursue if they decide not to continue in academia. It can be daunting to consider what types of careers are out there, and how to connect these jobs to the skills and knowledge gained through a research-based program. This session will provide strategies for identifying possible career paths, and assessing those options, as well as leveraging a research-based program for a variety of career paths.

This interactive workshop will be facilitated by staff members of UBC Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies and Counselling Services to assist graduate students in building strong working relationships with their supervisor and committee members to support their progress through their graduate programs. 

Become aware of conversation skills and tools to support a positive relationship with your supervisor from the beginning, and learn to sidestep or manage potential conflict through the establishment of expectations, problem resolution skills, and holding confident conversations.

Some course-based Master’s programs are designed to prepare students for specific career paths; others equip students with skills that can be applied in multiple career options. Either way, students may find themselves wondering how to identify possible career options. This session will provide strategies for identifying possible career paths, and assessing those options, as well as connecting a course-based Master’s degree to a variety of career options.

This session will help graduate students identify relevant employers, craft effective introductions, and prepare thoughtful questions that showcase their expertise and curiosity. Learn how to highlight graduate-level skills in a way that resonates with industry representatives, understand what to expect at the event, and leave with practical strategies for building connections that extend beyond the fair.

Change can be hard. We need more than good intentions and resolutions to change our patterns  regardless of whether it is related to your desired personal, career, or academic goals. Learn about the stages of behaviour change and related skills needed to move towards effective and consistent action that you can realistically maintain in order to reach your goals.

Putting things off to the last minute? Having a hard time starting a project? Or is it hard to finish and actually put a close to something you are working on? This workshop is here to help you procrastinate less and get more done. Contrary to what most people think, procrastination is not fundamentally a time management problem, which is why just trying to manage your schedule better is limited in effectiveness in changing this pattern of behaviour.
