Why did you decide to pursue a graduate degree?

I was a teacher for six years in elementary schools. I taught within immigrant communities in Chicago. There was a huge gap between what is realistically expected of immigrant populations and what the government was expecting in standardized test scores. I felt that through research, I could help support closing this gap.

Why did you decide to study at UBC?

To work with amazing scholars. And just look outside, at the mountains . . . nothing like it!

What do you hope to accomplish with your research?

Creating more spaces for out-of-school literacies in the regular classroom, which will further support marginalized populations succeed in schools.

What are your future career goals?

University Professor

What has been your most memorable Vancouver experience so far?

Skiing 20 minutes away and swimming in the ocean a month later.

What advice do you have for new graduate students?

It's a good place. Rains a lot too - just like Holland.
