Why did you decide to pursue a graduate degree?
My drive for truth-seeking by focusing on the freedom and plurality of media eventually led me to pursue a master's in Journalism. I wanted to expand my knowledge of the field and learn new skills and technologies that have developed in the field of journalism.
Why did you decide to study at UBC?
As an international student, several factors attracted me to UBC’s Master of Journalism program. I specifically chose UBC because the other top universities in Canada do not offer a master’s in journalism. Moreover, the weather and aura that Vancouver has are unbeatable.
What is it specifically, that your program offers, that attracted you?
My master’s at UBC will also help me gain a specialisation as I get to learn from the best people in the industry such as Dr Kamal-Al-Solaylee - an award-winning journalist. The mandatory co-op program will also allow me to dive into the industry and gain some hands-on experience. For these reasons, an MA in Journalism from UBC was the obvious choice for me.
What was the best surprise about UBC or life in Vancouver?
The biggest surprise about UBC was how welcoming and accommodating UBCites are. They gave me a sense of warmth that helped me fight homesickness.
What aspect of your graduate program do you enjoy the most or are looking forward to with the greatest curiosity?
My co-op program is an aspect of my graduation that I am looking forward the most to as it will instil professional skills and give me major opportunities to build a strong network.
What do you see as your biggest challenge(s) in your future career?
Journalists' biggest challenge is maintaining credibility as trusted news sources and combating accusations of "fake news" along with the growing abuse of power in journalism.
How do you feel your program is preparing you for those challenges?
Teaching us mandatory Media Ethics and Media Laws as subjects are preparing us to learn how to combat those issues.
What aspects of your life or career before now have best prepared you for your UBC graduate program?
I chose to pursue my graduation in Political Science (Honours) from highly sought-after Hindu College, University of Delhi to widen my perspective and understand the sociopolitical realities. I learned about the individualistic nature of reality in different contexts and how information can don different meanings. I also completed a diploma in Journalism and Mass Communication from Amity University, Haryana to better my chances of getting into this program.
What do you like to do for fun or relaxation?
I love to clean my room as it helps me create a more comfortable space for me when I wish to relax or I find a friend and go window-shopping with them for fun.
What advice do you have for new graduate students?
Please do not try to limit your experiences by building friendships in one particular community only. Your networking is your biggest asset, utilize it. And learn from everything- all your failures teach you at least one important life skill that will help you in future.
