Why did you decide to pursue a graduate degree?

I was good at philosophy, and had ideas I wanted to explore further. Additionally, while graduate school did not and does not offer me any certainties about my future, it opened up a pathway out of the situation I was in and wanted to leave.

Why did you decide to study at UBC?

I applied because I wanted to work with a specific member of faculty here. I also love to ski, and had heard that Vancouver has a pretty cool queer community.

What is it specifically, that your program offers, that attracted you?

My supervisor, and the fact that the philosophy department at UBC appeared quite socially progressive around issues I care about, reflected in the work being produced. And the location.

What was the best surprise about UBC or life in Vancouver?

How good the summer is here.

What do you see as your biggest challenge(s) in your future career?

Finding a job.

What aspects of your life or career before now have best prepared you for your UBC graduate program?

I am technically a high school dropout and worked in dead-end jobs for some years before starting university. Those experiences really shaped my perspective and drive.

What do you like to do for fun or relaxation?

I ski, bike, hike, take a lot of walks and explore Vancouver's greenery. Read (yeah, seriously). I like to write and journal, to draw and create. Also Vancouver has a lot of really cool dogs, so petting them is pretty great!

What advice do you have for new graduate students?

Have a hobby or activity or *something* that you enjoy that is not in any way related to you studies, and make sure you find some space for it every week. Writing a dissertation can be lonely but it doesn't have to be. Find a working group, share each others' work, use the time as unscheduled group therapy! But really, find people to share your work with.
