Understanding the Language of Genes: AI Approaches to Modeling and Interpreting Transcriptomic Profiles

Why did you decide to pursue a graduate degree?

I pursued a graduate degree after gaining hands-on experience in industry, where I witnessed firsthand the growing need for innovation in computational methods. The fast-paced evolution of technology and the steep learning curve required to stay at the forefront of computing inspired me to formalize and deepen my knowledge through graduate research. At the same time, I’ve always had a personal passion for solving complex, meaningful problems and achieving a long-term goal of contributing to science and healthcare. A graduate degree offered the ideal path to combine technical rigour, creative exploration, and personal growth in pursuit of that vision.

Why did you decide to study at UBC?

I chose to pursue my graduate studies at UBC because of its strong international reputation for academic and research excellence. UBC offers access to world-class facilities, advanced infrastructure, and a vibrant, interdisciplinary environment that fosters innovation and personal growth. As a Vancouver resident, studying at UBC also provides the opportunity to remain close to home while engaging fully with one of the top academic communities.

What is it specifically, that your program offers, that attracted you?

After working for over a decade in the field of computer science, I found myself drawn to a new challenge, one that would allow me to apply my experience in CS and AI to a broader, more interdisciplinary context. Bioinformatics stood out as a perfect fit, offering a rich intersection between computational methods and biological questions. It’s a field full of unknowns and untapped potential, where AI has the power to unlock new insights and drive scientific discovery. This combination of technical depth and impactful application is what drew me to the program.

What was the best surprise about UBC or life in Vancouver?

I was already living in Vancouver before starting my program, so there weren’t many surprises on that front. However, what did surprise me at UBC was the level of investment in research, both in terms of funding opportunities and the quality of infrastructure available to graduate students.

What aspects of your life or career before now have best prepared you for your UBC graduate program?

I believe every stage of my life has had a direct or indirect impact on preparing me for, and guiding my decision to pursue, graduate studies. From my time as a master’s student to working as an industry engineer and later as a researcher, each experience helped shape my interests, refine my skills, and clarify my long-term goals, ultimately enabling me to take this step with purpose and confidence.

What advice do you have for new graduate students?

One piece of advice I’d give to new graduate students is to remember that learning and coursework are just one part of the journey. Equally important are communication, networking, and building meaningful connections, both within academia and beyond. Take the time to understand how your field operates, what drives innovation in your industry, and how to navigate the professional landscape. Graduate school is not just about becoming an expert in a topic; it’s also about growing as a researcher, collaborator, and future leader in your domain.
