Why did you decide to pursue a graduate degree?

I did a BA directly after high school, and although I loved it, I took some time off after finishing to consider whether I wanted to go to grad school. For four years, I did my best to forget all about school and give myself a chance to see and test some other options. In the end, the ideas that captivated me in my BA wouldn't seem to go away, so I decided to begin my studies again.

Why did you decide to study at UBC?

UBC has a well-funded MA program, and is particularly strong in the areas of philosophy most relevant to my interests. The fact that British Columbia is my home province, and that Vancouver is a gorgeous place to live year-round also informed my decision.

What do you hope to accomplish with your research?

Speaking broadly, it seems to me that honing our understanding of the precise nature and extent of human freedom has all kinds of potential applications. That being said, if I could shed even a little light on exactly what is going on when we make deliberate choices, or what we mean when we call one another free and responsible people, I would be more than satisfied.

What are your future career goals?

If all goes well with my MA, I will be applying to PhD programs in the fall of 2013. From there, I hope to become a teacher and writer of philosophy, this strange and enchanting stuff that seems, stubbornly (perhaps poetically for someone so interested in free will) to have made up its mind about me.

What has been your most memorable Vancouver experience so far?

I have seen a number of excellent shows in Vancouver - from Pearl Jam, Derek Trucks and Grizzly Bear to Bela Fleck & The Flecktones. It is a real pleasure to live in a city so in touch with the music world. Also, Jazz Fest in June/July is a great time to live in Vancouver.

Personal Interests / Hobbies

In my time away from school I have developed a love for fiction, and I try to keep a novel or two on the go at all times. I play the guitar, and do a bit of running. I am also an aspiring foodie, and am perpetually working on my skills in the kitchen. Sending and receiving all manner of unique parcels/postcards is another hobby of mine.
