Why did you decide to pursue a graduate degree?
I have always been interested in learning new things and gaining new experiences, and I felt that a graduate degree would help me grow both personally and professionally. After receiving my Bachelor of Science in Microbiology & Immunology, I wanted to continue learning, meet diverse groups of people, and gain new perspectives. The opportunity to study for my Master’s at the UBC Sauder School of Business was the perfect opportunity for me to integrate my science background with business to enhance my knowledge and meet my career goals.
Why did you decide to study at UBC?
UBC is a world renowned institution that is dedicated to student learning, growth, and development. I studied at UBC for my Bachelor of Science, and I knew that I wanted to continue my studies on the campus I called home. At UBC, I have learned from incredible professors and mentors, worked with inspirational colleagues, and gained new life experiences that have shaped me into who I am today.
What is it specifically, that your program offers, that attracted you?
The ability to learn business knowledge and integrate that with my existing science background to elevate my career was what motivated me to study at the UBC Sauder School of Business. The MM curriculum provides opportunities for leadership, marketing, and strategic management that allows students to explore their career interests and discover their talents. Furthermore, the MM program is very diverse, and I looked forward to learning about everyone's backgrounds to gain new fresh perspectives and insights.
What was the best surprise about UBC or life in Vancouver?
I am always pleasantly surprised with the number of activities to do here. For example, biking to the beach to watch the sunset never gets old. UBC’s beauty never ceases to amaze me, and it is truly a privilege to live, work, and learn in Vancouver.
What aspect of your graduate program do you enjoy the most or are looking forward to with the greatest curiosity?
I am very excited to meet my classmates and professors! I am looking forward to meeting new people from different backgrounds and mutually learning from one another.
What aspects of your life or career before now have best prepared you for your UBC graduate program?
I have always considered myself a lifelong learner, and so my curiosity and drive have best prepared me for my UBC graduate program. Throughout the years, I have worked with diverse groups of people and I have learned a lot from them and their experiences. These opportunities have opened doors for me to enhance my communication and leadership, which I believe will strongly help me in my future career endeavours.
What do you like to do for fun or relaxation?
I enjoy cycling and exploring the beautiful outdoors Vancouver has to offer. I also enjoy reading, visiting different coffee shops, and crocheting hats and bags. Spending time with friends and family is also a great way to relax and have fun.
What advice do you have for new graduate students?
I would advise new graduate students to explore new opportunities, expand their network, and enjoy the experience! While succeeding in your program is always an inherent goal, it is also important to prioritize your health and wellbeing. Reaching out to friends, family, and other supports can help ground you during stressful times. As well, engaging with the community and meeting new people can lead to discovering new hobbies and passions.
