What are your main responsibilities or activities in your current position?

I am the principal investigator of a research group developing informatics methods and resources for the analysis of cancer genomics data and precision medicine.

How does your current work relate to your graduate degree?

My graduate degree provided the fundamental background in medical genetics and bioinformatics necessary for my current research activities.

What motivated you to pursue graduate work at UBC?

The desire to learn about bioinformatics from Dr. Steven Jones, who encouraged me to apply.

What key things did you do, or what attitudes or approaches did you have, that contributed to your success?

Determination bordering on obsessiveness are needed to succeed in this field.

What is your best piece of advice for current graduate students preparing for their future careers?

Develop skills and interests that provide for a variety of career options. Only pursue academic research if you are very passionate about this all-consuming activity.
