Why did you decide to pursue a graduate degree?
Ever since I can remember, I have wanted to work in a health care setting. During my undergraduate degree, I discovered my passion for psychology and realized that I wanted to pursue a career as a psychologist, therefore I made it my goal to pursue a graduate degree.
Why did you decide to study at UBC?
I decided to study at UBC as it is a world-renowned university that recruits many highly accomplished and diverse professors and students. I completed my undergraduate degree at UBC and had a positive experience engaging with the UBC community and learning from many experts in their fields.
What is it specifically, that your program offers, that attracted you?
The SACP program offers comprehensive training as a School Psychologist in the masters program and opportunities in the doctoral program to diversify your clinical skills based on your goals. It promotes theoretical foundations and emphasizes building strong research and clinical skills. There is also a focus on community, diversity and social justice, which is in line with my research and clinical goals. This program has supported my journey in becoming a researcher with diverse skills and a well-rounded, and conscientious scientist-practitioner.
What was the best surprise about UBC or life in Vancouver?
After spending over 8 years at UBC, I continually enjoy the beauty of campus. I love that I continually find great places to relax and enjoy nature. I also love that there are many inspiring locations to study. However, the best part of life at UBC is the connections I have made with other graduate students!
What aspects of your life or career before now have best prepared you for your UBC graduate program?
My previous experience in research settings as well as many clinical settings really prepared me for graduate studies. These experiences were diverse, challenging and helped me develop the skills needed to succeed in the graduate school environment.
What advice do you have for new graduate students?
Take advantage of the opportunity to continually challenge your thinking, learn from diverse perspectives and world views, and to engage with communities. Try to understand yourself and what you need to stay accountable and on time with your studies but also what your goals are as the number of opportunities can be overwhelming. I would also encourage new graduate students to be patient and kind with themselves as graduate school is a challenging journey. Lastly, I would advise graduate students to try and prioritize some areas of their life outside of graduate school as well, such as their hobbies or relationships.
