Why did you decide to pursue a graduate degree?
I understand that science-based conservation and management is needed to mitigate the immense human impacts to our oceans. I am pursuing a graduate degree because I realized that it is through ocean research that I can best make use of my creativity and analytical skills.
Why did you decide to study at UBC?
I decided to study at UBC to work with my supervisor, Dr. Brian Hunt, and for the opportunity to work on a project that I am passionate about. UBC also has a nice campus close to the ocean.
What is it specifically, that your program offers, that attracted you?
I was excited about collaborating with various researchers and working with a dynamic laboratory.
What was the best surprise about UBC or life in Vancouver?
I love how the beaches and the mountains are just minutes away. Vancouver also has a very diverse urban wildlife and wonderful parks.
What aspects of your life or career before now have best prepared you for your UBC graduate program?
Before my PhD, I was a research assistant in many projects which allowed me to join lots of fieldwork, go to conferences, meet many grad students, and work with people outside academia. This helped me learn important skills and understand where I fit into the academic community.
What do you like to do for fun or relaxation?
I enjoy biking, hiking, reading at the beach, and live music.
What advice do you have for new graduate students?
I would tell new graduate students to always be kind to yourself and others! Welcome all the help you get, and pay it forward.
