There are numerous MSc and doctoral research-focused (aka thesis-required) programs at UBC. Typically, these programs have coursework components followed by an in-depth research project or thesis. In this webinar, we focus on applying to research-focused programs and highlight the elements unique in applying to these programs.

We'll be joined by Professor Alannah Hallas, from UBC's Department of Physics and Astronomy. She heads the Quantum Materials Design Lab, which is part of the Stewart Blusson Quantum Matter Institute. Professor Hallas will provide a faculty perspective and share her best advice for putting together a strong application.

This session will cover:

  • Difference between research and course-based graduate programs.
  • Differences in the application process for research vs non-research programs.
  • Writing a statement of interest
  • Finding and reaching out to a supervisor
  • References – What we look for and who you should ask
  • Interview tips
  • Q&A
