Jocelyn Coupland
Why did you decide to pursue a graduate degree?
As a Métis woman, I want to learn more about and contribute to the preservation and the sharing of Indigenous knowledge. I worked since 2020 as a teacher in the Abbotsford School District, and the process behind curating curricula long fascinated me. Pursuing a graduate degree was the next step in my learning journey.
Why did you decide to study at UBC?
UBC is one of just two universities in Western Canada that offer a Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) program that is ALA-accredited. The program is highly respected and the campus is gorgeous. It is an honour to be studying on the lands of the Musqueam People.
What is it specifically, that your program offers, that attracted you?
The MLIS program has a strong focus on managing information for the benefit of others with a high level of rigour and depth. The First Nations Curriculum Concentration (FNCC) offered by the iSchool is what made me decide to apply to the program. I appreciate the support for Indigenous students that is offered through the FNCC.
What was the best surprise about UBC or life in Vancouver?
There is so much to do! I love the outdoor opportunities as well as the community events and the cultural celebrations. There is a strong community of artists in the region who are passionate about spreading beauty and creativity throughout Vancouver. Places like the Rio movie theatre offer incredible history along with special events.
What aspects of your life or career before now have best prepared you for your UBC graduate program?
As a teacher, I learned how to Indigenize curriculum for students. I love learning, but taking what I know and transforming it into something that students can understand is its own skillset. This has given me experience in processing complex information and then using it based on the task at hand. Working with the Cloudscape Comics Society has been a wonderful way to build connections in Vancouver. I've had the pleasure of participating in events with Cloudscape and learning how the publishing industry functions. I've learned how to manage projects and collaborate with people toward a shared goal.
What do you like to do for fun or relaxation?
In the spring and summer months, there are many comic conventions throughout Vancouver. It's fun to see what local artists are creating and to support them. When I need to take a break from studying, walking by the ocean melts the stress away.
What advice do you have for new graduate students?
While studying, don't forget to explore. The bus lines can take you all the way into Langley! There is much to see even just on campus. Check out the museums and the multiple libraries UBC has and drink in the local art. There are jaw-dropping views all around.
