Awards totalling approximately $4.3 million per year are provided to recognize the significant contributions of PhD students to the research activities of the university. The awards are available to all new and continuing PhD students, except those who have their tuition paid by a sponsor or who are not assessed tuition (see "Eligiblity" for details).

Award values per student will be approximately:

  • $600 per year for domestic students being assessed continuing tuition fees (year 4 and later)
  • $1,300 per year for domestic students being assessed full tuition fees (years 1-3)
  • $1,500 per year for international students.

Note: as with most graduate award funding at UBC, students are assigned this funding in three instalments - each instalment is 1/3 of the total annual amount, assigned at the beginning of each term (September, January and May) of the academic year.

Eligibility

The awards are available to all new and continuing PhD students except:

  • Those students who have their tuition paid by a sponsor:
    • An external sponsor could be an Aboriginal community, employer, or government agency such as a student's home government. See sponsorship billing for details.
    • Students who receive a UBC staff tuition waiver are not eligible.
  • Those students who are not assessed tuition.

Application Procedures

The award will be assigned automatically to eligible students; students do not need to apply.
