Arash Takshi
What are your main responsibilities or activities in your current position?
I teach undergraduate and graduate students, and also do research.
How does your current work relate to your graduate degree?
As a faculty member I am continuing my research that I started at UBC during my PhD program, and I am also teaching a few subjects that I learned at UBC.
What do you like and what do you find challenging about your current position?
I like doing research. Teaching is a constant learning process for me.
What motivated you to pursue graduate work at UBC?
My interest in learning more.
What did you enjoy the most about your time as a graduate student at UBC?
I not only learned about the science in my field, I also learned a new culture: a Canadian culture that I am proud of.
What key things did you do, or what attitudes or approaches did you have, that contributed to your success?
My focus has always been on constant learning. I did not limit myself by shallow metrics such as publication numbers.
What is your best piece of advice for current graduate students preparing for their future careers?
Being a graduate student is a unique opportunity for engaging in deep research and developing a passion for the community. Do not miss that opportunity!
Did you have any breaks in your education?
I had a seven-year break after my MSc before starting my PhD. Working in industry during this period helped me to decide the field that I wanted to focus for my PhD.
How did you find out about/obtain your current position?
I found out about my current position through a IEEE academic job advertisement.
How are jobs normally posted and filled in your organization or industry?
Through the university website and professional journals.
