Why did you decide to pursue a graduate degree?

I decided to attend graduate school because I wanted the freedom to pursue the topics and research that interest me. Luckily, my research allows me to explore areas that I am personally interested in, in the way that best suits me. When I work on something now, it's because it is something I want to do, rather than something assigned to me. It definitely gives me a lot more personal motivation and creative freedom!

Why did you decide to study at UBC?

I love Vancouver! It's the greatest city in the world. I love the integration of nature into the city; it has all of the mountains, forests, and oceans. In addition, the city is a melting pot of cultures, and that's definitely reflected at UBC. It feels like there's a place for everyone at UBC.

What is it specifically, that your program offers, that attracted you?

What attracted me to the program was the opportunity to work with a wide variety of great and distinguished professors and colleagues in it!

What was the best surprise about UBC or life in Vancouver?

I think just how much there is to explore. I've been here for 3 years now and it still feels like I've barely scratched the surface. There's still so many parks to walk through, restaurants to eat at, animals to pet, things to do! That holds true for UBC as well, there's so many buildings that I haven't been.

What aspects of your life or career before now have best prepared you for your UBC graduate program?

Well, I would say my undergrad at UofT was pretty good preparation. It helped me get exposed to the university process and doing research in general!

What do you like to do for fun or relaxation?

I read, hike, play badminton and basketball, play video / board games, and cook.

What advice do you have for new graduate students?

Please do stuff outside of research, don't spend 60 hours a week in the lab. It's probably not good for your mental wellbeing.
