Why did you decide to pursue a graduate degree?

My undergraduate degree is in Fine Arts, and my work in media before last year was largely self-taught. Seeing how digital technologies have rapidly shifted the way the media communicates, I wanted to zoom out for a bit to consider my contribution – specifically in the area of arts and culture – and acquire new skills for addressing the current state of media.

Why did you decide to study at UBC?

The journalism program at UBC is well-rounded and digitally-driven, and in media today there really is no other option. I'm also originally from BC so coming back here to do my master's was a coming home of sorts.

What is it specifically, that your program offers, that attracted you?

An experienced and varied faculty; a program that looks at multiple aspects of the media and how and when they intersect.

What was the best surprise about UBC or life in Vancouver?

I was warned about the rain and that meeting friends in this city is tough, but even when it rains it's bright, and in a program like journalism, you meet a bunch of people.

What aspect of your graduate program do you enjoy the most or are looking forward to with the greatest curiosity?

Meeting people, listening, learning, making connections, and sharing stories in engaging ways.

What do you see as your biggest challenge(s) in your future career?

Balancing freelance work in a field with few full-time job opportunities.

How do you feel your program is preparing you for those challenges?

Open dialogue about the realities; resources and connections to professional networks.

What aspects of your life or career before now have best prepared you for your UBC graduate program?

I'm a trained dancer and worked professionally up until last year. That discipline, time management, and work ethic carries into how I've been able to manage this past year and what I know I can accomplish next year.

What do you like to do for fun or relaxation?

Go see live performance; walk the city; run; snowboard.

What advice do you have for new graduate students?

Approach each and every day open to learning something new. That might include a monumental shift in ideology, or some new technology that makes your life easier.
