History of 3MT 2011 at UBC
The Three Minute Thesis (3MT) is an academic competition that assists current research higher degree students with developing effective presentation and communication skills. Participants have just three minutes to explain the breadth and significance of their research project to a non-specialist audience. In 2010, over 30 universities from across Australia and New Zealand have participated in this fun, highly informative and very entertaining event.
The Three Minute Thesis (3MT) is an initiative of The University of Queensland, which was introduced in 2008 and is now run annually. In 2010, The University of Queensland hosted the Inaugural Australia and New Zealand 3MT competition. 33 universities competed in that inaugural competition, representing over 50,000 PhD and Master of Philosophy students. UBC is one of the first Universities in North America to host a 3MT competition.
The 3MT Competition at UBC was launched in January, 2011. Announcements were sent out and an Australian 3MT judge from the University of Melbourne, Simon Clews, offered a coaching session for students on March 3, 2011. Following his seminar, Simon produced the guideline for Making the Most of Your Three Minutes. Faculty Heats began in March and continued into April, 2011, leading up to a May Final.
If you have any questions about 3MT, please don’t hesitate to contact the Graduate Pathways to Success Program.
The assistance of the University of Queensland in launching this 3MT competition at UBC is very much appreciated.
