Set design for Romeo and Juliet

Research group:
Ana Luisa
Research supervisor:
Ronald Fedoruk
Research location:
Telus Theatre
Research description:

I will be designing the set for Romeo and Juliet. The show is part of the UBC theatre program for next winter. I will be designing for a vertical and interesting space such as the Telus theatre at the beautiful Chan Centre. My goal is to get the actors to use all three dimensions of the space, and to encourage mobility throughout it.

What impact do you hope your research will have?:

I would like to encourage people into the arts. I would like to enhance the theatre experience by making it different and exciting.

Why did you decide to pursue a graduate degree?:

I needed to expand my design abilities in the field I am more passionate about. Having a 5 year degree in architecture gave me a strong background.

Why did you choose to come to British Columbia and study at UBC?:

Because it is a top university for the program I am studying; just a couple of students are selected for the design MFA program to give them exclusive opportunities. The city is one of the most beautiful cities in the world so there was no doubt about it.

Do you have any tips for students from your home country coming to Canada / to UBC Grad School?:

Do not hesitate to apply. Everyone has a distinct ability that can be exploited.

What has been your most memorable Vancouver experience so far?:

Being able to design for a couple of shows already.

Personal interests / Hobbies:

Theatre, dance and architecture

What are your future career goals?:

I am interested in designing for the Vancouver theatre and dance scene as well as for the film industry.
