Perceptions of Oyster Mortality

British Columbia’s oyster aquaculture industry has faced increased instances of mass oyster mortalities in recent years. However, there exists a great deal of uncertainty within the scientific community and oyster industry as to specific causative factors. This study aims to elicit the diversity of expert (growers and scientists) opinions of causes of oyster mortality and determine whether there are particular theories of cause around which expert opinions cluster. The study also aims to document any observable phenomena related to mortality events that could be linked to scientific theories of cause and assist growers in developing adaptative measures.
