Why did you decide to pursue a graduate degree?
The goal of pursuing a PhD degree was to further my studies and research in oral pre-cancer and cancer, while expanding my knowledge and skills for becoming a well-rounded researcher. During my undergraduate Dental Hygiene Degree Program (Entry-to-Practice) at UBC, I learned that many people are unaware of the existence of oral cancer and when found, it can often be too late to successfully manage. Besides providing oral cancer screenings to individuals at regular dental visits, I believed that I could help a larger population at the preventative level through combining the core values of a researcher and dental hygienist.
Why did you decide to study at UBC?
I completed my undergraduate and master’s degree at UBC, where I enjoyed working on research projects on oral cancer prevention, so I knew I wanted to do my PhD at UBC as well. The faculty and program I am in gives me the freedom to work in different aspects of oral cancer research. I have worked in the lab, in the clinic and with patients.
What is it specifically, that your program offers, that attracted you?
I was attracted to the Craniofacial Science program as I knew I wanted to contribute to and spread awareness on the detection and management of oral cancer. My PhD supervisor, Dr. Denise Laronde, was a perfect fit, as she is experienced in various aspects of research in early oral cancer detection with her team at the BC Oral Cancer Prevention Program at the BC Cancer Research Institute.
What was the best surprise about UBC or life in Vancouver?
The best surprise about UBC is how beautiful the campus is, especially in the summertime. I still enjoy walking around campus after all these years.
What aspect of your graduate program do you enjoy the most or are looking forward to with the greatest curiosity?
I am grateful to have nice and supportive team members to work with. Everyone is open to sharing their experiences and knowledge and helping each other out on projects.
What aspects of your life or career before now have best prepared you for your UBC graduate program?
My undergraduate studies in the Dental Hygiene Degree Program at UBC equipped me with the basics I needed to be prepared for my graduate program. I had exposure in writing literature reviews and reports, epidemiology, and even participating in research projects!
What do you like to do for fun or relaxation?
I love exploring the cafes and bakeries in Vancouver. Even on a busy day, a quick tea break is always doable!
What advice do you have for new graduate students?
I guess all of us who pursue graduate studies are enthusiastic and determined about our topic of research. However, sometimes this enthusiasm and determination might turn into trying to achieve “perfectionism.” It’s important to remember that any progress is progress, and that perfect is not always necessary.

My research explores changes in the incidence of oral cancer and pre-cancer in the 21st century. Studying temporal patterns in oral cancer and pre-cancer allows for early detection of changes in incidence and trends over time, which highlights factors at risk that may need further attention. I am investigating how the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted oral cancer incidence in British Columbia. I am also exploring how oral pre-cancer incidence and its characteristics have changed over the past 10 years.
