The Burroughs Wellcome Fund has announced a one-time award program to support improved approaches to training doctoral students in the biomedical and related life sciences: specifically, to bring a rigorous quantitative and statistically-informed approach to their thinking and research. The fund will provide a grant of $150,000 to support faculty effort and relevant administrative support for up to two years of work on curricular development, course and workshop development, and/or building or substantially restructuring didactic elements of graduate training. UBC is one of 24 universities in North America, and the only Canadian university, that have been invited to each submit a single nomination. A total of four grants will be awarded.

Application Procedures

Interested proponents are invited to submit a letter of intent (maximum three pages). Given the timeline available and the scope of the projects likely to be funded, it is recommended that only faculty / groups already engaged in related initiatives consider applying. The letter of intent should address the following:

  • name(s), affiliations and contact information of project lead(s)
  • names and affiliations of other key personnel involved
  • outline main budget components and estimated amounts
  • brief responses to the following five questions:
    1. What do you hope to achieve by developing a more quantitative graduate training experience?
    2. How is the graduate education you hope to develop different from typical biomedical training?
    3. What obstacles currently keep you from offering this type of education?
    4. Why is this institution a particularly good place to invest this award?
    5. What about the primary faculty involved makes them the right people in whom to invest this award?
