Postdoctoral Fellowship in the Governance of a Blockchain-enabled Digital Aviation Records System

Project background:

There is an opportunity to transform the aerospace sector with the adoption of digital technology. DARS (Digital Aviation Records System) is a platform, backed by blockchain technology, that is designed to create a one-stop trusted data point for all the key stakeholders within the aviation industry including airlines, original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), maintenance and repair organizations (MRO), lessor operators, and more. The goal of DARS is to digitally transform aviation operational support systems by creating a data platform that allows organizations to access all relevant data about aircraft parts digitally. The creation of the DARS platform is led by TrustFlight, in collaboration with the University of British Columbia, Boeing Canada, and RaceRocks. More details about the project is available here:

Scope of work:

A key challenge in developing the DARS platform will be the governance of the consortium. The consortium here refers to the diverse set of organizations/stakeholders who participate in and derive value from the platform. The research questions that the postdoctoral researcher will focus on are the following:

  • What are the optimal governance models for multi-organization, international blockchain ecosystems?
  • For private, permission based blockchain ecosystems, what are the most efficient and effective models for data publishing permissions/consensus?
  • What are key incentives for participation in industry blockchains focused on optimizing data standardization and sharing?
  • What are the regulatory implications related to data (e.g. privacy for personal data, etc.) for multinational blockchain ecosystems?

While the postdoctoral research will focus on the above questions, the postdoctoral researcher will be embedded with the Trustflight team and will participate in all aspects of the DARS platform development. Exposure to all aspects of the project will allow the postdoctoral researcher to obtain a deep understanding of the challenges that need to be overcome in a blockchain-enabled digital transformation of an industry. The wide exposure to all aspects of the project will also allow the postdoctoral researcher to help support and advise master’s students on the other sub-projects that are part of the larger project.

A PhD in business administration, industrial engineering, economics, computer science or related fields. A background in blockchain technologies or the airline industry will be a plus.
