PhD position – Modeling forced vibration of plates in contact with fluid

Fully funded PhD position is available in the Mechanical Engineering department at The University of British Columbia, in the research group led by Dr. Jasmin Jelovica. PhD students are eligible for an array of awards and Teaching Assistantships.

This research focuses on analyzing nonlinear forced vibration of plates that are in contact with fluid, subjected to harmonic excitation force. To do this, numerical or semi-analytic model needs to be developed using e.g. finite element method, boundary element method, higher-order plate and shell theories. Advanced structural solutions will be considered, ranging from functionally graded, multi-layered structures to bio-inspired sandwich panels.

Part of the research could consider acoustic predictions using discontinuous Galerkin FEM solver. The work is part of a larger research program that investigates the effect of vibrations of marine vessels due to internal machinery and equipment on underwater radiated noise.

The successful candidate holds Master’s degree in Mechanical, Aeronautical, Civil or Marine Engineering, with focus on computational mechanics. Having experience with at least a few of the techniques mentioned above is necessary, by having written own codes applied to plate (and similar) problems.
