Postdoctoral fellow in bio-based thermal insulating materials

A postdoctoral position in the area of cellulose based textile and thermal insulation materials is available immediately in the Sustainable Functional Biomaterials lab at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada.

The Sustainable Functional Biomaterials lab (https://nanocellulose.forestry.ubc.ca/) focuses on the isolation, chemical modification, and assembly of bio-based nanomaterials (cellulose nanofibrils, cellulose nanocrystals, lignin nanofibres, lignin nanoparticles) into functional materials, for thermal energy management and conversion, water treatment and environmental remediation, ion conduction, and energy storage.

Knowledge, Skills and Qualifications:

A recent Ph.D. in polymer chemistry and engineering, textile chemistry and engineering, wood and cellulose chemistry, materials science and engineering, or related discipline;

Demonstrate good understanding on thermal conduction and heat transfer;

With past experience and publications records in thermal insulating materials, either synthetic or natural polymer based;

Demonstrate knowledge in cellulose chemistry and modification;

Experience in working with cellulosic nanomaterials is a plus;

Hand on experience in materials synthesis and characterization, such as SEM, TEM, BET, thermal conductivity, and thermal analysis;

Strong communication skills in both oral and written English;

Job responsibility:

Develop advanced thermal insulation materials from cellulose or nanocellulose based materials;

Preparation of lab reports and manuscripts for publication;

Presentation at international conferences.

Salary: minimum $42,000 per year plus benefit, depending on the experience

The position is available immediately. The initial appointment is for one year and will be renewed based on the performance and funding availability.
