As doctoral education expands to include new participants and evolves to embrace broader forms of inquiry, outputs, collaborations and perspectives, important new questions arise.

  • What forms of inquiry should “count” as doctoral research?
  • What scholarly outputs and artifacts can comprise a dissertation?
  • How can PhD students collaborate meaningfully with non-academic stakeholders in co-creating impact-oriented knowledge and eliciting change?

This session will explore the evolving landscapes and boundaries of doctoral-level scholarship and its expression in the dissertation. Join the conversation with Dean and Vice-Provost, Graduate & Postdoctoral Studies, Dr. Susan Porter and UBC PhD students who have broken the mold with new forms of doctoral scholarship and “next-generation” dissertations.

Speakers will address the following questions

  • What was your scholarship and how did you approach it?
  • Why did you choose that approach?
  • Did you have to persuade your supervisor to support, buy-in?
  • What particular challenges did you face?
  • How have you changed as a scholar as a result of your work?
  • What comes next for you?
