Statistics I: Exploratory Data Analysis (via Webinar)

Date & Time

Thursday, 24 September 2020
13:00 to 15:00

Offered by

Graduate Pathways to Success and the Applied Statistics and Data Group

Registration Closed / Past Event

Exploratory Data Analysis (EDA) is essential for understanding your data and a necessary step prior to any testing or modeling. You will learn insightful graphical and numerical techniques for investigating important aspects of your data such as relationships between variables and unusual observations. More specifically you will learn about:

  • exploring categorical data using contingency tables and side-by-side bar charts
  • exploring numerical data using histograms, box plots, density plots, scatterplots and 3 variable plots
  • various useful measures of center, spread and shape for describing data and how to choose between them
  • identifying and handling outliers

Check out the video below for a teaser from a previous session:

This is the first workshop in a 6-part series focused on the foundations of statistics.

Statistics is a scientific discipline that enables reaching meaningful conclusions from data. In order to produce trustworthy results, one needs to be able to justify the choice of the statistical methods and models and to validate the underlying assumptions.

The aim of this webinar series is to give an overall review of the statistical concepts behind the various methods in statistical software using examples of various data structures.  Interpretations of the results obtained from different statistical tests and models will be discussed. Hence, the aim is not to solve specific project problems.

If you are a graduate student and have questions about your specific project please see ( on how to take advantage of a one-hour free statistical consultation. Each webinar has some self-contained content but some aspects will build on concepts taught in the previous sessions so there is a benefit in attending all the webinars.

The Applied Statistics and Data Science Group (ASDa; in the UBC Department of Statistics provides assistance in the statistical formulation of research questions, the design of experiments and sampling plans for surveys, the choice and explanation of statistical methodology, statistical computing and graphics, statistical analysis, the interpretation of findings, and more. ASDa also plays a role in continuing education on and off the UBC campus, giving seminars and workshops on statistical concepts and methodology to various departments and research groups and at teaching hospitals.
