More than ever, organizational success depends on people working together - effectively. The pressure to communicate productively, quickly turn ideas into profitable action and consistently deliver results never decreases. Using team simulation exercises, participants work from a clear understanding of personal strengths and an appreciation of the differences in others will be the foundation of success in the future.
*This session is being offered in collaboration with Mitacs Training. Mitacs Training provides professional development training to advanced degree graduates, supplementing their education and research experience with the tools necessary to succeed in today’s workforce.
To constitute an effective team, its members must share a common goal, have respect for each other, and be motivated to use the strengths of each member to achieve their objectives. Using team-based, hands-on, experiential learning exercises, the objective of this one-day workshop is to provide participants with an opportunity to build their ability and awareness participating in and leading an effective team unit that meets deadlines and sees results.
Through participating and completing this workshop, participants will:
- Discover the key steps and competencies to build an efficient and effective team
- Learn how to manage the barriers that keep teams from performing
- Be able to apply the best practice of teams into daily communication

Dene Rossouw, Associate, Kwela Leadership and Talent Management. Dene has over 17 years of facilitation and consulting experience in the communications field, and has been an integral part of the Mitacs Step program since 2008. He specializes in improving leadership and employee engagement through effective communication and sensemaking. As an innovative communicator, Dene coaches leaders on how to have more relevant conversations in the workplace and how to use personal power to inspire action and develop strategic partnerships. Dene has 18 years of facilitation and consulting experience in the field of communications. He is the VP for the Canadian Association of Professional Speakers, a certified executive Coach through Royal Roads University, and a certified emotional intelligence facilitator using the BarOn Emotional Intelligence Quotient Inventory - EQ-i™. He has the Associate Certificate in Workplace Conflict from the Justice Institute of British Columbia and a Bachelor of Theology from the University of South Africa.
Registration opens on Monday, March 8th at 9:00am.
Graduate students from all BC post-secondary institutions are eligible to participate. Priority will be given to UBC graduate students registered in the current academic session. After registering, you will receive confirmation and additional event details within 2 business days. NOTE: Postdoctoral Fellows who would like to attend this session need to register through the Postdoctoral Fellows Office.
NO-SHOW FEE: No-shows are costly for our program and, most importantly, leave students on the waiting list. Students who register and do not attend will be charged a $25 no-show fee. To avoid this fee, please cancel at least 2 business days in advance by e-mailing firstname.lastname@example.org. If we are able to fill your spot from the waiting list, you will not be charged.
