What is a Collaborative PhD?

The world increasingly faces "wicked problems" that are by definition complex and poorly defined or understood. Addressing these requires multiple disciplinary, methodological and epistemological approaches, as well as multiple actors. Tomorrow’s scholars, both inside and outside the academy, need to have a breadth and depth of understanding, an ability to see and respond to multiple perspectives, the capacity to adapt to different ways of thinking and environments, and the ability to effectively collaborate and communicate with diverse audiences. Opportunities to develop these are not available in many PhD journeys, nor are students’ abilities in this area meaningfully assessed. A Collaborative PhD would allow students to work together with faculty to address a single “grand challenge” from diverse disciplinary perspectives, with part of the dissertation reflecting transdisciplinary, collaboratively authored work.

Join G+PS to discuss what a transdisciplinary Collaborative PhD dissertation might look like – and how it might work for students in diverse programs.
