We will start with a simple correlation analysis for two quantitative variables, and then discuss modelling the relationship between two quantitative variables by simple linear regression. We will introduce the least squared estimation method that is used to estimate the linear regression coefficients. Diagnostic methods for checking the underlying assumptions of the simple linear regression will also be covered. We will expand the simple regression model to include additional predictor variables, including other quantitative variables (multiple linear regression) and categorical variables (ANCOVA).

Want to get an idea of what to expect? Check out the video below for a teaser from last year's session.

This is the 4th workshop in a 6-part statistics series

More on this Series:

Statistics is a scientific discipline that enables reaching meaningful conclusions from data. In order to produce trustworthy results, one needs to be able to justify the choice of the statistical methods and models and to validate the underlying assumptions.

The aim of this webinar series is to give an overall review of the statistical concepts behind the various methods in statistical software using examples of various data structures.  Interpretations of the results obtained from different statistical tests and models will be discussed. Hence, the aim is not to solve specific project problems.

If you are a graduate student and have questions about your specific project please see (https://asda.stat.ubc.ca/sos/) on how to take advantage of a one-hour free statistical consultation. Each webinar has some self-contained content but some aspects will build on concepts taught in the previous sessions so there is a benefit in attending all the webinars.

ABOUT ASDA

The Applied Statistics and Data Science Group (ASDa; asda.stat.ubc.ca) in the UBC Department of Statistics provides assistance in the statistical formulation of research questions, the design of experiments and sampling plans for surveys, the choice and explanation of statistical methodology, statistical computing and graphics, statistical analysis, the interpretation of findings, and more. ASDa also plays a role in continuing education on and off the UBC campus, giving seminars and workshops on statistical concepts and methodology to various departments and research groups and at teaching hospitals.
