This session will provide a detailed overview of upcoming doctoral award competitions, including advice on writing a successful application. Eligibility criteria for major funding agencies will be reviewed, as well as application procedures and tips for putting together a strong application. A faculty member will provide an adjudicator’s perspective on the review process.
Who should attend? Full-time, research-based domestic and international students who are
(i) Master’s students planning to undertake a PhD program by September 2020 or
(ii) PhD students who are currently starting the first, second or third year of their program.

Dr. Julian Dierkes is the Associate Dean, Funding, Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies, and is responsible for providing academic leadership in graduate student funding, liaising with external agencies and donors, promoting student success in award competitions, and supporting programs in their responsibilities related to student financial support. He is an Associate Professor and Keidanren Chair in Japanese Research in UBC’s School of Public Policy and Global Affairs.
Brendan Morey is the Assistant Dean, Student Administration and Awards, in the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies, with many years of experience overseeing scholarship competitions and collaborating with funding agencies across Canada.
General registration opens on Monday, August 19 at 9:00 am.
Priority will be given to UBC graduate students registered in the current academic session.
