*This session is being offered in collaboration with MITACS Training (formerly Mitacs Step). Mitacs Training provides professional development training to advanced degree graduates, supplementing their education and research experience with the tools necessary to succeed in today’s workforce.
Skills of Communication is a full-day session featuring the tools and tips of better verbal communication. It will test your assumptions and mental models and for many it may be the first time you learn about the Ladder of Inference, the Johari Window and more. The goal is to make you more aware of the tools available to help you become a better communicator in both your work and personal lives. The mastery of these skills is a long-term process, but by simply becoming more conscious of the various communication styles, including your own, you can approach conversations differently and change conversational direction to achieve better outcomes.
To increase participant awareness and application of tools available to them to become better communicators in work and life.
Through participating and completing this workshop, participants will:
- Understand how personal assumptions and mental models adversely influence communication
- Learn how to determine your own personal assumptions and how to avoid them
- Learn to navigate and approach difficult conversations

Judy Thomson is a chartered accountant, business consultant and speaker who has held executive positions in human resources and administration with global companies in Canada and Asia. She was also part of the start-up management team of the world-famous Rocky Mountaineer Railtours. In addition to her role as chief operating officer of Shepa Learning Company, Judy is vice-chair of The Vancouver Board of Trade’s Women’s Leadership Circle® advisory board, a director of the BC Women’s Enterprise Centre, and is a past director of a publicly traded mining exploration company.
Gayle Hallgren-Rezac is a writer, speaker, entrepreneur (founder, Cookies by George) and a YWCA Woman of Distinction. She has spent over two decades observing and writing on networking around the world. She is a member of the Davos Circle, having attended the Annual World Economic Forum over eleven times. She is also an expert on the “art of conversation”, a subject she writes and speaks on frequently. Gayle is chief engagement officer of Shepa Learning Company, their training and development company.

NO SHOW FEE: No shows are costly for our program and, most importantly, leave students on the waiting list. Students who register and do not attend will be charged a $25 no show fee. To avoid this fee, please cancel at least 48h in advance by e-mailing email@example.com . This will allow us to add someone from the waiting list and run a full session. If we are able to fill your spot from the waiting list, you will not be charged.
Graduate students and postdoctoral fellows from all BC post-secondary institutions are eligible to register. Priority will be given to currently registered UBC graduate students. If you are a non-UBC student or a postdoctoral fellow and would like to register, please send an email to: firstname.lastname@example.org after the registration open date/time stated above. If you do not receive a registration confirmation or waitlist e-mail from email@example.com within two working days of registering, we recommend e-mailing us to follow up as this indicates we have not received your registration submission.
