*This session is being offered in collaboration with MITACS Training (formerly Mitacs Step). Mitacs Training provides professional development training to advanced degree graduates, supplementing their education and research experience with the tools necessary to succeed in today’s workforce.
More than ever, organizational success depends on people working together - effectively. The pressure to communicate productively, quickly turn ideas into profitable action and consistently deliver results never decreases. Using team simulation exercises, participants work from a clear understanding of personal strengths and an appreciation of the differences in others will be the foundation of success in the future.
To constitute an effective team, its members must share a common goal, have respect for each other, and be motivated to use the strengths of each member to achieve their objectives. Using team-based, hands-on, experiential learning exercises, the objective of this one-day workshop is to provide participants with an opportunity to build their ability and awareness participating in and leading an effective team unit that meet deadlines and see results.
Through participating and completing this workshop, participants will:
- Discover the key steps and competencies to build an efficient and effective team
- Learn how to manage the barriers that keep teams from performing
- Be able to apply the best practice of teams into daily communication

Russel Horwitz, MEng, has worked extensively as a leadership consultant / trainer since 2004 across a wide variety of sectors, including government, publically-held, private and non-profit. Russel spent 14 years in the high technology/engineering sector, where he held management roles in product development, marketing, customer service and training. His expertise includes leadership and team development as well as executive coaching. As a facilitator, Russel draws on his experiences to connect to his audience by relating topics to personal, relevant stories. Russel has been working with the Mitacs Training program since 2008.
Registration opens Monday, November 6, 2017 at 9:00 am.
NO SHOW FEE: No shows are costly for our program and, most importantly, leave students on the waiting list. Students who register and do not attend will be charged a $25 no show fee. To avoid this fee, please cancel at least 48h in advance by e-mailing email@example.com . This will allow us to add someone from the waiting list and run a full session. If we are able to fill your spot from the waiting list, you will not be charged. Participants must commit to attending all day.
Graduate students and postdoctoral fellows from all BC post-secondary institutions are eligible to register. Priority will be given to currently registered UBC graduate students. If you are a non-UBC student or a postdoctoral fellow and would like to register, please send an email to: firstname.lastname@example.org after the registration open date/time stated above. If you do not receive a registration confirmation or waitlist e-mail from email@example.com within 2 working days of registering, we recommend e-mailing us to follow up as this indicates we have not received your registration submission.
