Have you ever been in a class or presentation session where the silence felt like a heavy wet blanket? Or conversely, where the discussion veered deep into tangent-land? In this session, we will provide you with practical strategies for starting and guiding on-topic and inspiring discussions in your classes. You will be introduced to a simple structure that you can use to organize any discussion – to start off strong and continue to run smoothly. We will also give you tools to maintain student participation. By the end of this session you will develop a plan on how to start a discussion, keep it focused and avoid having it dissolve into chaos (or worse yet – the blank stares!).

Facilitator: Jan Ludert

This function is part of the CTLT Summer Institute taking place from August 24-27, 2015.  This week long initiative will feature a series of workshops designed for new and developing faculty, staff, graduate students, teaching assistants, and anyone else in the UBC teaching community.  Explore and share fundamental teaching and learning practices that can be implemented into your instruction.  For a complete list of events, please click here.

Registration Information

At this time we require everyone - UBC affiliated or otherwise - to register for the CTLT events system. If you already have a CWL please sign in. However, if you do not have a campus-wide login, then please register for a BASIC cwl account (you will see basic as the bottom option on the 3rd screen)
