How to Survive and Thrive as a UBC Postdoc:

To succeed in your first few years of post-graduate work you’ll need access to many different resources and an accurate understanding of the culture and climate of the university. Attending a Postdoc Orientation session is a great way to begin.

If you are a UBC Postdoctoral Fellow who has not yet attended a Postdoctoral Orientation session presented by the UBC Postdoctoral Fellows Office (PDFO) & Postdoctoral Fellows Association (PDA) you are invited to register for our next Orientation event.

The half-day session, which is aimed at newly arrived Postdoctoral Fellows, provides a wealth of information on the academic and research landscape of UBC as well as the resources available to you as a Postdoc. Presentations on achieving career success are complimented by those sharing insights into Canadian culture and life in Vancouver. Even if you believe you already have a good understanding of UBC and life in Vancouver, attending the session will give you an opportunity to meet your fellow Postdocs and add to your personal and professional network.

At UBC, the Postdoctoral Fellows Office (PDFO) is located within the Faculty of Graduate Studies. The Postdoctoral Fellows Office (PDFO) provides general advice to prospective, incoming and current Postdoctoral Fellows (PDFs) and their supervisors, delivers orientation sessions and professional development events and workshops. Under the leadership of Associate Dean for Postdoctoral Fellows Dr. Tony Farrell, and with the support of Manager Hourik Khanlian and Assistant Daniel Maldoff, the PDFO is dedicated to enhancing the development and experience of PDFs at UBC.

A peer-to-peer organization, the Postdoctoral Fellows Association (PDA) is a coalition of volunteer PDFs and Research Associates (RAs) with the goal of enhancing the postdoctoral experience at the University of British Columbia in all aspects—personal, professional, and social. All PDFs are encouraged to join the UBC-PDA. Information concerning PDA, its current executive, available positions, seminars, etc. is available through the PDA webpage.
