Making sense of it all: Bioinformatics Graduate Program
Bioinformatics is a relatively new, and increasingly important, area of research used in understanding complex biological processes such as genomics, genetics and specifically large-scale DNA sequencing.
It employs biological and computational approaches to predict biological structures. Bioinformatics is becoming increasingly more important in health research as it can be a powerful tool in the development of new treatments for disease.
The program at UBC allows students to explore their passion by integrating centres in computer science, statistics, molecular biology and biotechnology with translational research groups at hospitals and at the clinical interface. Members of the UBC Centre for High Throughput Biology, the Department of Statistics, Bioinformatics, Computer Science, the Genome Sciences Centre at the BC Cancer Agency and the Michael Smith Laboratories are active participants in the program with several UBC faculties.
At UBC, the Bioinformatics Program sits within the College for Interdisciplinary Studies (CFIS) and offers master’s and doctoral tracks. Meet Olena Morozova, a Bioinformatics graduate student, and learn about her work at www.youtube.com/user/UBCinterdisciplinary.
