Student Service Appointments

The information in this section was formerly drawn from UBC Board of Governors' Policy 76. This Policy is under review, so some details of this information may change.

1. General

1.1. Student service appointments are intended to help properly qualified students of The University of British Columbia meet the cost of their studies at the University. Students are appointed on Form UBC 1001 (Recommendation for Appointment: Student Service). Such appointments may involve part-time duties in teaching, research, or other academic activities. The conditions of appointment as a Teaching Assistant or as a Marker are governed by the collective agreement between the University and the applicable bargaining unit.

2. Graduate Students

2.1. Appointment: General

2.1.1. Normally, only those students registered full-time in the Faculty of Graduate Studies are eligible for student service appointments. Appointments offered to students prior to their admission to the faculty are contingent upon admission.

2.1.2. Appointment as a Graduate Academic Assistant for a full-time graduate student shall not involve an average of more than 12 hours of duty per week. Permission to exceed this limit may be given by the Dean of the Faculty of Graduate Studies in special circumstances.

2.2. Categories of Appointment

2.2.1. There are five categories under which graduate students may be appointed: Graduate Teaching Assistant I and II, Marker, Graduate Research Assistant, and Graduate Academic Assistant.

2.2.1.1. Graduate Teaching Assistant I and II: See collective agreement between the University and CUPE Local 2278.

2.2.1.2. Marker: See collective agreement between the University and CUPE Local 2278 (Vancouver).

2.2.1.3. Graduate Research Assistant: Graduate Research Assistants (GRA’s) are supported from their supervisor’s research grants. The duties constitute part of the student’s graduate degree requirements. The entire stipend is considered to be a scholarship, the conditions of which may be specified by the granting agency. GRA appointments may be for any specified period satisfactory to the grantee. The conditions of the appointment may be specified by the granting agency.

2.2.1.4. Graduate Academic Assistant: Duties of a Graduate Academic Assistant (GAA) include all academic duties not conforming to those specified above (for example, research performed for a member of faculty which is not directly related to the student’s own research). The stipend may NOT be considered a scholarship.

3. Undergraduate Students

3.1. Categories of Appointment

3.1.1. Undergraduate Teaching Assistant: See collective agreement between the University and CUPE Local 2278 (Vancouver).
