Full-time faculty are not normally allowed to register for programs leading to UBC degrees or diplomas.

1. General
1.1. Full-time members of faculty may not normally register for programs leading to University of British Columbia degrees or diplomas.
1.2. In very exceptional circumstances, members of faculty may be allowed to register for full-time degree programs, but then only under the following conditions:
1.2.1. The application shall bear the recommendation of the applicant’s Department Head and the Dean.
1.2.2. Standard residence and performance requirements shall be satisfied. Doctoral students shall take a leave of absence from their employment until admitted to candidacy. Master’s students in programs that do not permit part-time study shall take at least one year’s leave of absence from their employment.
1.2.3. Members of faculty may not register for a graduate program in their own Department, or in their own Faculty if that Faculty is deemed small by the Dean of Graduate Studies.
1.2.4. Deans, directors of institutes, assistant or associate deans or directors or department heads shall not register for degree programs unless they take leave of absence for the duration of the program.
1.2.5. Members of faculty registered in a doctoral program may retain their full-time employed status after admission to candidacy. Members of faculty registered in a Master’s program, if registered only for a Master’s thesis, may retain their full-time employed status.
1.2.6. Membership of supervisory and examining committees for faculty members enrolled as graduate students shall be subject to the approval of the Dean of Graduate Studies.
1.2.7. All applications from members of faculty to enroll in full-time degree programs must be approved by the Office of the President.
1.2.8. Where the program desired is part-time, a member of faculty may enroll in such a program as a part-time employee of the University, the part-time salary to be negotiated with the Department Head. Registration for 8 to 17 credits of course work per winter session or no more than 6 credits of course work per summer session shall be interpreted as a part-time program.
