Checklist for New Graduate Students
Confirm Acceptance of Your Offer
Please notify your program by email whether or not you will be accepting your offer from UBC. If you choose not to accept the offer, we would appreciate a brief note to tell us why.
Choose and Register for Courses
To confirm that you intend to register, please email your graduate program directly and consult with your supervisor or graduate advisor. Contact information for programs can be found in the Graduate Degree Program listing. Course offerings and outlines can be found online, and you can also register online.
Please remember that you must register every term throughout the duration of your graduate degree program.
Pay Tuition Fees
Annual tuition fees are divided into three installments, due in September, January and May. Amounts vary by program, and will include Student Activity Fees and Extended Health Insurance Fees. Check your fee amounts and due dates and pay fees online at the Student Services Centre web site listed above. Your password for the website is initially set to your date of birth in YYMMDD order, six digits only. Please change this to maintain security of your records.
- If you don't pay on time your course registration will be cancelled
- Students who are eligible for a Tuition Award or an International Partial Tuition Scholarship and who have not been assigned this award by the week before the fee due date should contact Awards at the Faculty of Graduate Studies
- Tuition fees are subject to change without notice
Apply for Awards and Scholarships
An annual university-wide competition for several major awards (University Graduate Fellowship, NSERC, SSHRC, and CIHR) is held soon after the beginning of the fall term. Competition is very strong, and preparing a successful application takes time. You are therefore encouraged to begin working on your applications in July or August.
International students who have a job offer must apply for a Canadian Social Insurance Number (SIN) upon arriving in Canada. For more information, read the Pre-Arrival Guide.
Apply for Housing
The UBC Housing department's application process is entirely separate from the Faculty of Graduate Studies admissions process. The number of applicants for all housing properties exceeds the number of vacancies available for new applicants so it is important to apply as early as possible if you plan to live on campus.
Off-campus accommodation in Vancouver can be expensive and particularly difficult to get later in the summer. Plan to arrive in Vancouver early if you need to rent off-campus.
Update Your Personal Information
It's your responsibility to keep UBC informed of any change of mailing or email address so that professors and faculty members know where to contact you. You can change your personal information online at the Student Services Centre website. Your password for this site is initially set to your date of birth in YYMMDD order, with six digits only. Please change this to maintain security of your records.
Apply for Medical Insurance
You must apply for Medical Services Plan (MSP) coverage as soon as you arrive in BC. There will be a statutory waiting period consisting of the remainder of the month of arrival plus two months.
Canadian citizens and Permanent Residents from other provinces should make arrangements with former medical plans to ensure continued coverage.
International students: You will be automatically enrolled in iMED, a basic insurance plan that covers the remainder of the month of arrival plus two months.
Attend Graduate Studies Orientation
The Graduate Student Society (the independent voice of graduate students on campus) and the Faculty of Graduate Studies hold orientations for graduate students in September and January.
