Research group:
SPACES
Research supervisor:
Laurie Ford
Research location:
Children, Families, and Communities Lab (Scarfe 2404)
Research description:

The purpose of this study is to investigate children's perspectives on safety in their neighbourhood. The methodology for the present study is qualitative and will be based on a symbolic interactionism approach, which emphasizes that individuals create meaning about the world by interacting with their social and physical environment, including family, peers, social groups etc. To explore how children perceive safety in their neighbourhood, six to ten children aged seven to nine years within the Gateway neighbourhood in Surrey, BC, will participate in three to four small group sessions where group interviews and individual and group drawing activities will be conducted.

What impact do you hope your research will have?:

I expect that exploring the meanings attributed to safety from the unique perspective of the children themselves will enhance the understanding of neighbourhood factors contribute to children’s well-being

Why did you decide to pursue a graduate degree?:

To enhance my knowledge about the factors that may impact child development and to find different ways to promote children's well-being and academic as well as social-emotional development.

Why did you choose to come to British Columbia and study at UBC?:

I chose to live in BC because of the climate and beautiful nature, and I decided to study at UBC because of the richness of the School Psychology program.

Do you have any tips for students from your home country coming to Canada / to UBC Grad School?:

Be ready to study very hard and to challenge yourself. Studying abroad is not easy, but it has been the best learning experience that I have ever had.

What has been your most memorable Vancouver experience so far?:

My snowy wedding in the middle of the winter of 2009 at the top of Grouse Mountain!

Personal interests / Hobbies:

Travelling, dancing, practicing sports

What are your future career goals?:

To do my PhD and have my private practice as a school psychologist.
